Christmas Movies, Our Favorites through the Years
The Thing About Traditions
Name three things you received for Christmas when you were seven years old. Okay, let’s try a more recent time. Name three things you received for Christmas three years ago. I recall that Mr. Patient gave me a beautiful Kitchen-Aid stand mixer. The memory of that gift is clear for two reasons: I hadn’t asked for such an elaborate piece of kitchen equipment and I appreciated the high cost of it. However, I can’t necessarily recall other gifts.
Perhaps you remember very special gifts through the years, a piece of jewelry, a treasured heirloom, an elaborate item. I can remember the Barbie airplane I received in the 1970s. I remember when Daddy gave the family a huge box. It took up most of the counter space next to the sink. They called the box a “microwave” and we had never heard of such. I would venture to guess, however, that most of us don’t recall each gift from each holiday season. We hold in our hearts and heads the presence of our loved ones more than the presents.
More than the gifts, I recall the feeling of being together in my childhood family. The fire was warm and glowing in the fireplace of our 1830s home. We kids walked up to the mantle. We were eager to see what Santa had stuffed in our stockings. I recall the welcoming aromas of the delicious food that Mama and other family members would present on the Christmas dinner table. I remember a child’s feeling of protection. I felt satisfaction just being together. It was a day when Daddy didn’t have to go to work and Mama didn’t have so many house chores.
In Mr. Patient’s and my family, my heart fills with joy as I go back in my mind to the laughter as we worked our annual jigsaw puzzle with our kids. We began some traditions when they were little that we continue to honor. My favorite Heritage Ways YouTube video features an interview with our six children in 2017. We asked them, “What are your favorite memories or traditions in our family?” I treasure those responses. You can check out that video entitled, “Family Christmas Traditions.”
Let’s encourage one another to give the gift of time this year. Work a puzzle, prepare snacks together, enjoy a delicious meal around a festively decorated table, drive around to see Christmas lights, watch holiday movies with popcorn and hot chocolate.
Count your blessings, friend, name them one by one.
Have a precious holiday season filled with contentment.

Family Favorite Recipes
Years ago my Mr. Patient and children encouraged me to write down many of their favorite recipes in one book. My first cookbook, From Katie’s Kitchen, Vol. One, includes 205 of the recipes that they requested. This book has become a fan favorite with Heritage Ways homemakers world-wide. Get your copy HERE and start cooking our many of the recipes that our family has been cooking for generations.
