Crispy, crunchy peanut butter bars with a layer of peanut butter-chocolate on top, need I say more?!
This recipe, or a version of it, has been found at many a church potluck dinner and in school cafeteria lines for years.

Combine crispy rice cereal with a peanut butter base and layer with a creamy chocolate mixture that satisfies all peanut butter lovers.
What You’ll Need
- Crispy rice cereal: Any brand will work. This is not the same as puffed rice cereal.
- Peanut butter: Use smooth or crunchy. I used generic brand peanut butter. An all-natural would work but might not melt as well as a more typical peanut butter that contains added oils.
- Brown sugar: Use light or dark.
- Butter: I use unsalted for everything but salted is just fine.
- Chocolate chips: Use any brand. I prefer a more natural brand when I have it on hand. In this video, I used what I had found on mark-down at the grocery store. Use dark or milk chocolate chips.
- Mixing bowl, stirring spoon, sauce pan, spatula, stainless steel baking sheet or pan. I prefer this one made in Ohio, USA. It is stainless and works perfectly with this recipe.
- This tool makes measuring out solids very handy. I had wanted one for years and my wonderful Mr. Patient got me this one for Christmas. I love it!

Options
- Instead of chocolate chips, use another flavor. For extra peanuty flavor, use peanut butter chips both in the base and top layers.
- Use crunchy or smooth peanut butter.
- Use light or dark brown sugar.
- Use a larger pan for thinner bars and a smaller pan for thicker bars.

Ingredients
Method
- In a saucepan, over medium-low heat, combine and melt the first three ingredients. Do not continue to cook after it is melted.
- Pour the mixture over the rice cereal and stir until cereal is coated.
- Add the cup of chocolate chips. Stir.
- Pour into a greased baking sheet. I use the Wren Pan from Quality Plastics. It measures 9" x 12.5".
- Press the mixture with a spatula or hand. I use a butter wrapper.
- Melt in a saucepan the two remaining ingredients. Again, do not overcook. Chocolate is useless when burned.
- Pour chocolate mixture over bottom layer.
- Refrigerate. Cut into bars or squares when ready to serve.
