Homemade Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Whole Cranberry Sauce, Traditional or Low-Carb

Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 12 oz bag cranberries
  • 1 navel orange
  • 3/4 cup sugar or sweetener of choice (see notes)
  • 2 tbsp water
  • pinch salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method

Prepare ingrediens.
  1. Wash cranberries in colander. Remove any that are mushy.
  2. Using a microplane or citrus zester, remove orange zest to equal 1 teaspoon.
  3. Half the orange and juice it using a manual juicer to remove 1/2 cup juice. If not enough juice is produced from one orange, water may be used to make the 1/2 cup.
Cook the sauce.
  1. Over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons water and 1/2 cup juice to a sauce pan. Add cranberries and sugar, or sweetener of choice. Add one pinch of salt.
  2. Stir over medium heat until liquids begin to bubble. Turn heat to low and allow to simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring to prevent sticking.
  3. Cranberries will pop as they cook.
  4. Add cinnamon and orange zest. Stir.
  5. Mixture will become thick and most berries will pop. It is okay that all do not. This adds texture to the sauce.
  6. Remove sauce from heat and allow to cool. Refrigerate.
