Seasoned Ground Beef (for many recipes)

"One pound of browned ground beef" may be one of the most common ingredients in many recipes. Let's cook ground beef and address several questions a cook may have regarding choosing and cooking beef. No more burned or tough meat!
Course: Main Course

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef, or other ground meat of choice
  • 1/2 cup chopped peppers and onions mixture, optional may use fresh or frozen (thawed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon high-quality salt (I use Redmond's Real Salt.)
  • black pepper (I use fresh cracked.)
  • 1 to 3 teaspoons cooking oil of choice

Method

Video tutorial may be found at Heritage Ways YouTube.
  1. Pre-heat medium-sized cast iron skillet, with nothing in it, on low for about 1-2 minutes. Then, turn heat to medium. If using skillet that is not cast-iron, preheating is not necessary.
  2. Add a small amount of cooking oil of choice. The amount of oil will depend on the fat content in the meat. Allow it to melt and heat slightly.
  3. Add meat, any vegetables of choice. Chop with meat chopper or utensil.
  4. Cook over medium to medium-high heat. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Cook until no pink remains.

Notes

**Seasoned, browned ground beef may be used in so many ways. To use later, freeze in labeled plastic bag or freezer-appropriate container.
**Any ground meat may be cooked this way: turkey, chicken, elk, venison, bear, you-name-it.
**Vegetables are optional to add. Possibilities are onions, peppers, celery, garlic and parboiled carrots.
