For as long as I have been cooking ~ almost 50 years in both my childhood home and in my own home ~ I have had to learn how to use leftovers in order to save money and not be wasteful. Money for food was never overly abundant in either home but we have always eaten well. Learning to use food wisely and prevent waste is a skill worth cultivating.
Many folks, especially families, tend to have an endless supply of leftover bits and pieces that are begging to be turned into a new dish. Not many folks want to eat leftover plain rice but the possibilities are many for leftover rice. One of our favorites is to make Fried Rice using leftover rice and other items found to be leftover.
A tip to save time and money is to batch, or bulk, cook ground meat with peppers, onions, celery or garlic and freeze in smaller amounts. This meat-veggies combo may be used for pizza, spaghetti, casseroles, breakfast burritos and more!
We often use a variety of meat such as pork, beef, venison, or sausage. Let’s use that pre-cooked meat to make Fried Rice at home. You’ll love the simplicity and versatility of this method.
Fried rice is a popular side item in both Asian- and Mexican-inspired restaurants. Make it at home as a side dish to accompany most types of protein. In fact, this dish contains protein allowing it to be served on its own. Use this as a blank canvas to develop your own recipe. Amounts are only suggestions.
This dish, made with or without meat, is both perfect to use UP leftovers and to use AS leftovers. Rice, meat, veggies can be used to create your favorite version of Fried Rice. The leftover Fried Rice is great reheated, used as filling for burritos, tacos, taco salad, and more.
