Wassail is a traditional English hot spiced tea. This recipe is perfect for any cold weather activities. Friends at our house enjoy gathering around this combination of fruit juices and spices. It has been one of our most popular beverages during our many years of showing winter hospitality.
Our family has welcomed literally thousands of guests into our homes for almost 40 years. Before that, my parents hosted Open Houses, church fellowships, ladies’ groups, and more. Showing hospitality is a special gift to both the hosts and guests.

Many of our friends and family have come to expect this warming beverage and often ask for a recipe. As with most of my cooking, I did not have a particular recipe written down. That changed when it was time to compile my first cookbook. This recipe is one of many in the “Beverages” chapter.
From Katie’s Kitchen, Vol. One is filled with 205 family favorite recipes. My popular cookbook is now in the homes of Diligent Homemakers throughout the United States. It is also found in Canada, England, Australia, and The Netherlands. This cookbook is filled with my family’s comfort food favorites. It also contains delightful stories of the recipes’ origins, real menus, and cook’s notes. The book also holds ideas and tips I used when I owned a catering business.

We have always served Hot Wassail in a 45-cup urn like this one. We purchased two of these urns over 30 years ago and they are each still working just fine for us. We use one for Wassail and the other for coffee when we are hosting many guests. These urns are not just for catering parties or hosting large numbers of guests. They are perfect for large families. They also accommodate just a few friends. They keep coffee or tea hot for hours without burning or tasting “off.” This urn can make as few as 15 and up to 45 servings.
