Wheat Bread or Dinner Rolls

This recipe is a delicious bread dough that may be made into loaves or rolls. This bread was a hit at a large church dinner I catered in 1997. Try it for weeknight supper or a large dinner party. Freeze the bread or rolls.

Wheat Bread or Dinner Rolls

Servings: 3 loaves
Course: bread
Cuisine: bread

Ingredients

  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 3 cups warm water about 110F
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons salt (I use Redmond Read Salt)
  • 1 cup hot water about 110-120F
  • ½ cup butter melted
  • 8 cups whole wheat flour

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast and ¼ cup of the brown sugar in ½ cup of the warm water. Add remaining 2-½ cups warm water, sugar, white flour and salt. Beat until smooth. Cover and let rise, about 1 hour. Punch down and mix in the hot water, butter and whole wheat flour. Turn out in lightly greased bowl, cover and let rise until double. Punch down and shape into three loaves. Place in three greased bread loaf pans. Cover and let rise until double, about 1 hour. Bake at 375F for 45 minutes.
Makes three loaves or 3-4 dozen rolls, depending on size.
Family Favorite Recipes

Years ago my Mr. Patient and children encouraged me to write down many of their favorite recipes in one book. My first cookbook, From Katie’s Kitchen, Vol. One, includes 205 of the recipes that they requested. This book has become a fan favorite with Heritage Ways homemakers world-wide. Get your copy HERE and start cooking our many of the recipes that our family has been cooking for generations.
